Alt text depends on purpose

Concept · 12 minProduct guidance last checked: 21 October 2026

Learning outcome: Describe the information an image contributes in its context.

Alternative text depends on why an image is present. An informative image needs an equivalent of its relevant information. A functional image needs text describing the function. A purely decorative image may need an empty alternative in an appropriate implementation so it does not add noise.

For a complex chart, a short label alone may be insufficient; provide the important information in nearby text or a fuller description. AI can draft descriptions, but a person must check facts and purpose. Avoid guessing emotions, identity or details that are not visible. Review the image within its page, because the same image can serve different roles.

Worked example

A fictional magnifying-glass icon is a search button. “Grey magnifying glass with a circular handle” describes its appearance while hiding its purpose. “Search” communicates the action. The same icon used as decoration beside a visible Search heading may not need a repeated spoken description.

Try it yourself

Write alternatives for a search icon, a staff-training photograph and a chart of three monthly totals. Explain which information belongs in nearby text for the chart.

You can do this exercise on paper. If using an assistant, keep to the fictional material and an approved tool.

Compare your approach

Use the action for the functional icon. Describe only relevant visible information in the photograph. Give the chart a meaningful summary and access to its values; do not invent a trend from an unreadable image.

Check your understanding

What should the accessible name of the search button communicate?

  1. The software used to create the icon
  2. Its search action
  3. Every visual detail of the icon
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: Its search action. A functional image needs an accessible name that communicates the action. A detailed visual description can obscure what pressing the control will do.
