Inclusive language and accessible AI outputs

Finishing the course

Your final assignment

Create an accessible communication with documented checks and user feedback questions. Use the fictional examples from this course, or a non-sensitive scenario you are authorised to work on. Do not submit personal workplace records to complete the course.

Build your evidence pack

  1. Plain language without losing the condition: Rewrite the policy in two short sentences. Then list every condition that must survive the rewrite.
  2. Alt text depends on purpose: Write alternatives for a search icon, a staff-training photograph and a chart of three monthly totals. Explain which information belongs in nearby text for the chart.
  3. Translation, terminology and back-translation: Create a translation checklist for a short notice containing a date, a reference code and a conditional promise. Identify what you cannot personally verify without a language reviewer.
  4. Code-switching, dialect and intent: Write two versions of a harmless request using language varieties you genuinely understand. Keep the intent constant and define the expected classification before testing.
  5. Assistive workflows and user control: Design a two-view instruction format for a five-step task. Specify how a user switches views, checks the original and recovers from an accidental action.

Combine the five outputs in the downloadable course workbook. Write a short decision note explaining the problem, your chosen approach, the evidence used and one limitation that would matter in real use. Keep initial and revised versions where a check changed your answer.

Review against these criteria

  • Simplify wording while preserving the decision.
  • Describe the information an image contributes in its context.
  • Check meaning with qualified language knowledge.
  • Avoid treating language variation as an error by default.
  • Design support around a person’s actual task and preferences.

Ask a colleague or learning partner to challenge one assumption if available. If working alone, use the worked examples to review your reasoning and record the limits of that self-review. Completion is a personal learning record, not independent certification.

Change one condition

Choose one input or assumption from your original exercise and change it. Explain which part of the result must be recalculated, rechecked or withheld. Keep the revised answer and a short explanation of why the change matters. This is a transfer exercise: repeating the model answer without adapting it is insufficient.
