Reference consistency and controlled variation
Learning outcome: Keep a series recognisable without expecting identical generations.
A visual series needs a reference specification: palette, proportions, clothing or object details, viewpoint and features that must remain stable. Reference images can guide some generation systems, but consistency still needs review. A repeated seed is not a universal identity lock across tools or changed settings.
Change one purposeful variable per iteration. Keep a contact sheet and label what changed, so comparison is possible. Use assets you are permitted to use and avoid implying a real person's endorsement. If exact identity or product geometry is essential, consider whether a controlled source asset or manual edit is more appropriate than regeneration.
Worked example
A fictional mascot has round glasses, a green jacket and a triangular yellow badge. Across three illustrations, the jacket shifts to blue and the badge becomes circular. The review sheet catches those deviations even though each image looks attractive alone. The approved reference lists the badge shape as essential.
Try it yourself
Create a reference sheet for an invented mascot using five fixed features and two allowed variations. Draft a review grid for three poses.
You can do this exercise on paper. If using an assistant, keep to the fictional material and an approved tool.
Compare your approach
The grid should test each fixed feature separately. A successful pose variation changes gesture without silently changing identity cues. Record which details are essential so reviewers do not mistake every difference for a defect.
Check your understanding
What is the best basis for reviewing a character series?
- The assumption that one seed guarantees consistency everywhere
- A documented set of fixed and variable features
- Whether each image looks good in isolation
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A documented set of fixed and variable features. A reference specification makes essential consistency observable across images. Attractive individual pictures may still change important identity cues, and seed behaviour varies by tool and settings.
