Creative AI production and art direction · Module 1: Creative AI production and art direction in practice
Write an art direction brief
Learning outcome: Describe the visual job before choosing decorative details.
A visual brief starts with purpose, audience and placement. A small mobile banner has different needs from a poster. Specify the subject, composition, focal point and space needed for real text. Separate required information from optional atmosphere.
Choose a few observable style decisions, such as a restrained palette and soft side lighting. Long strings of adjectives can conflict without giving a reviewer a usable criterion. Keep exact wording, dates and diagrams in an editable design layer when precision matters. A generated image can supply illustration, but factual text still needs checking in the final layout.
Worked example
A fictional community workshop needs a phone-sized event banner. The first brief asks for a busy room full of tiny signs. The revised brief asks for two people at a desk, a clear empty area for the event title and a calm cream-and-green palette. The title and date are added separately so they remain readable and correct.
Try it yourself
Write a six-line brief for the workshop banner. Include aspect ratio, focal subject, text-safe area, palette, exclusions and two acceptance checks.
You can do this exercise on paper. If using an assistant, keep to the fictional material and an approved tool.
Compare your approach
Checks should include title readability at the intended size and space for the exact date. Do not judge only the full-resolution illustration. The design must work where the audience will actually see it.
Check your understanding
Which brief detail directly supports a usable event banner?
- An explicit area for the verified title and date
- As many decorative objects as possible
- A request for the image to feel expensive
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: An explicit area for the verified title and date. The banner must accommodate the actual information at its display size. A text-safe area supports that job, while decorative density and vague status adjectives do not establish usability.
