Data and measurement for AI
Finishing the course
Your final assignment
Write a data-quality and evaluation note that exposes misleading results. Use the fictional examples from this course, or a non-sensitive scenario you are authorised to work on. Do not submit personal workplace records to complete the course.
Build your evidence pack
- Missing data is a question, not a zero: Create a small table with a true zero, a missing time and a not-applicable field. Write the calculation rule and a sentence reporting its denominator.
- Data leakage and tomorrow’s information: List five possible ticket fields and label each as available at arrival or available later. Include one field that indirectly reveals the outcome.
- Accuracy, precision and recall: Recalculate the four counts and all three metrics. Explain which error matters if a person must review every flagged ticket, and which matters if missed escalation is especially costly.
- Synthetic data and circular evidence: Design six fictional messages that deliberately separate length from politeness. Label them yourself with a written rule and have another reviewer challenge ambiguous cases.
- Before-and-after is not automatically causation: Write a cautious two-sentence conclusion for the pilot. Then propose one design change that would make the next comparison more informative.
Combine the five outputs in the downloadable course workbook. Write a short decision note explaining the problem, your chosen approach, the evidence used and one limitation that would matter in real use. Keep initial and revised versions where a check changed your answer.
Review against these criteria
- Choose a missing-value treatment that fits the meaning.
- Keep evaluation information out of model development.
- Explain why a high accuracy can hide a useless classifier.
- Use generated examples without treating them as ground truth.
- Identify alternative explanations for a pilot result.
Ask a colleague or learning partner to challenge one assumption if available. If working alone, use the worked examples to review your reasoning and record the limits of that self-review. Completion is a personal learning record, not independent certification.
Change one condition
Choose one input or assumption from your original exercise and change it. Explain which part of the result must be recalculated, rechecked or withheld. Keep the revised answer and a short explanation of why the change matters. This is a transfer exercise: repeating the model answer without adapting it is insufficient.
