Charts: axes, units and visual persuasion
Learning outcome: Read the data structure before accepting a visual conclusion.
A chart interpretation needs the title, axes, units, scale and source population. A line that looks steep may reflect a narrow vertical range. A missing baseline or changed denominator can alter the impression without changing the plotted numbers.
Ask for the underlying table when exact values matter. If only an image is available, distinguish readable values from visual estimates. Check whether the chart shows counts, rates or cumulative totals. A description should preserve uncertainty and avoid inferring a cause from a trend. Accessible text should convey the relevant relationship, not merely say that a chart exists.
Worked example
A fictional chart shows unresolved tickets falling from 100 to 80 while total incoming tickets fall from 200 to 100. The unresolved count improves, but the unresolved share rises from 50% to 80%. A summary saying “service quality improved by 20%” chooses one measure and invents an explanation.
Try it yourself
Calculate both shares and write a two-sentence chart description. State which extra information would be needed to judge service quality.
You can do this exercise on paper. If using an assistant, keep to the fictional material and an approved tool.
Compare your approach
The shares are 50% and 80%. Describe the count and rate separately. Task complexity, time period and resolution definitions would help interpretation; the chart alone cannot establish the reason for the change.
Check your understanding
Why can a falling count still be a worsening rate?
- A chart cannot represent both counts and rates
- The denominator may have fallen faster
- Rates always rise when counts fall
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: The denominator may have fallen faster. A rate divides by a denominator. Here the unresolved count falls from 100 to 80, but total incoming tickets halve, so the unresolved share rises from 50% to 80%.
