Video sampling and missing moments

Concept · 12 minProduct guidance last checked: 21 October 2026

Learning outcome: Explain what a sampled summary cannot establish.

A video system may inspect selected frames, audio, subtitles or a combination. A summary based on samples can miss a brief event between frames. Even a detailed-looking summary does not prove that every moment was examined.

Define the question before choosing the review method. A broad topic summary and a precise claim that an event never occurred need different evidence. Record the time range, sampling method and modalities used when known. For consequential observations, inspect the relevant sequence directly and preserve timestamps. Avoid claims about identity, intention or emotion that the visible evidence cannot establish.

Worked example

A fictional training video is sampled at 00:00, 00:30 and 01:00. A warning banner appears from 00:18 to 00:22. The samples do not contain it. A summary saying “No warning was shown” is therefore unsupported. The narrower statement is that no warning appears in the inspected frames.

Try it yourself

Write two conclusions from the sampled frames: one justified and one unjustified. Propose a follow-up inspection that would answer whether the warning appears.

You can do this exercise on paper. If using an assistant, keep to the fictional material and an approved tool.

Compare your approach

The justified conclusion names the sampled frames. A follow-up must inspect the interval containing the potential warning or review the full relevant sequence. More confident wording cannot fill the temporal gap.

Check your understanding

No warning appears in three sampled frames. What follows?

  1. No warning was observed in those samples
  2. No warning appeared anywhere in the video
  3. The warning must have been in the audio
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: No warning was observed in those samples. The samples establish only what was observed at those moments. A short event between frames can be missed, so absence from samples is not proof of absence from the video.
