Multimodal AI: documents, images and sound · Module 1: Multimodal AI: documents, images and sound in practice
Cross-modal contradictions and evidence priority
Learning outcome: Keep conflicting sources visible instead of blending them.
Different modalities can disagree. A slide may show one date while the speaker says another. A scanned table may differ from its OCR text. Combining sources into one smooth narrative can conceal the conflict.
Create an evidence ledger: claim, source, timestamp or location, and status. Identify which source has authority for the decision, rather than assuming a particular modality is always superior. If authority is unresolved, report the disagreement and seek confirmation. Preserve original extracts so later reviewers can see why the conflict was raised.
Worked example
A fictional launch presentation shows 12 June on a slide, the speaker says 19 June and the approved release note says the date is undecided. The best summary does not average the dates or choose the more recent-sounding one. It says the presentation contains conflicting proposals and the approved record has no confirmed date.
Try it yourself
Create a three-row evidence ledger for the launch date. Write a brief update that distinguishes proposed dates from the approved status.
You can do this exercise on paper. If using an assistant, keep to the fictional material and an approved tool.
Compare your approach
The ledger should retain all three sources. The update should say the date remains unconfirmed and name the decision owner as a follow-up if unknown. Do not treat a spoken statement as an automatic approval.
Check your understanding
How should the date conflict be handled?
- Combine the dates into a new estimate
- Record the conflict and use the approved status
- Choose the date mentioned most confidently
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: Record the conflict and use the approved status. The approved record says no date is confirmed. Preserve the contradictory proposals without turning confidence or repetition into authority.
